England draw 2-2 with Northern Ireland for whom Peter Doherty scores in the last minute. Northern Ireland take the lead in the 54th minute through West Bromwich Albion centre forward Davie Walsh but fall behind to goals in quick succession from Wilf Mannion and Tommy Lawton.

Mannion then has a penalty saved in the 70th minute by Fulham goalkeeper Eddie Hinton and the roar that greets the save from the predominantly Irish crowd of 68,000 at Goodison Park can be heard back in Belfast!

Then ‘Peter the Great’ Doherty heads a last-minute minute equaliser to ensure that the Irish avoid defeat for the first time in 13 meetings with England.

Peter, who had pulled the strings and played with the skill that made him one of the world’s outstanding inside-forwards, is carried off at the end by jubilant Irish supporters.

1956

Ted Ditchburn, Tottenham Hotspur keeper, is selected to play for England in a Home International for the first time, against Wales later in the month. Ted has already played 361 League games, and is 35.

1973

Tommy Smith, who walks out on Liverpool half an hour before a match against Arsenal game when told he isn't in the team, is dropped by Bill Shankly from the Liverpool European Cup squad.

Preston North End manager Bobby Charlton completes the signing of David Sadler for £25,000, the third ex-United player to join Preston since Bobby took over the management of the club.

1945

The Players’ Union votes to strike over pay.

2002

Mick McCarthy announces he is leaving the Republic of Ireland managerial post after agreeing a severance package and says, apropos the ‘Roy Keane World Cup incident’, ‘I have no regrets about anything I did because we had a brilliant summer.’
