Centre forward Dave Hickson is born in Ellesmere Port. Dave remains the only player to have played for all three Merseyside clubs. He first signed for Everton from Ellesmere Port in 1948 and remained at Goodison Park until 1955 when he was sold to Aston Villa.

While on National Service and playing for Cheshire Army Cadets, he was under the tutelage of Everton legend Dixie Dean. In August 1957 he returned to Everton from Huddersfield Town for £7,500 before moving to Liverpool two years later, putting an extra 15,000 on the gate for his debut, with one fan running on to kiss him on the cheek!

At Everton he made 243 appearances, scoring 111 goals. At Anfield he would score 38 times in 67 games. After a spell with non-league Cambridge City, and Bury, he spent a productive last couple of league seasons at Tranmere Rovers where, at the age of 34, he was leading scorer in the 1962-633 season with 23 goals.

On retirement, Dave returned to his beloved Everton, where he was employed to give guided tours of the ground.

Sheffield Wednesday full back Wilf Smith is put on the transfer-list for £150,000. Manager Danny Williams says: “If someone wants him bad enough, this is the sort of money they will have to pay.”

1957

Jack Froggatt, left winger and centre half and Leicester City captain, is placed on the transfer list after a disagreement with manager Dave Halliday as to how he should play. Froggatt says: “I have to look to my future.

"I have been told once or twice by the manager about playing upfield.” Leicester also place England international Johnny Morris on the transfer list. Johnny says: “Leicester City are making me an old man well before my time.”

1972

Swindon Town pay Southampton £50,000 for Tom Jenkins. Meanwhile, Everton’s David Johnson (£125,000) and Ipswich Town’s Rod Belfitt (£75,000) swap clubs.

1937

The Second Division record crowd of 68,029 watch Aston Villa versus Coventry City at Villa Park.
