Martin Petrov scored a debut goal as Bolton began their North American tour with a 3-0 victory over the Charlotte Eagles.

Former Manchester City winger Petrov moved to Bolton this summer and fired in the team's third goal in the pre-season friendly.

Gary Cahill headed the opening goal in the eighth minute but was substituted shortly before half-time due to an injury worry, and striker Johan Elmander doubled the lead in the 50th minute before Petrov completed the scoring after 80 minutes.

Manager Owen Coyle praised Petrov and Robbie Blake, the former Burnley forward who also made his Bolton bow.

"Martin Petrov is a top player and Robbie's touch in the first half was exquisite, bringing others into play," Coyle told www.bwfc.co.uk.

"Those two have come into the group and you can see tonight how they have been made to feel welcome by the rest of the group.

"But it is wrong for me to pick put individuals because there were a lot of great performances out there, given that it was their first game and everything that comes with that."

Explaining the substitution of Cahill, Coyle said: "He felt his shin so we took him off as a precaution.

"We are not going to take a risk on someone of the stature of Gary Cahill and so we took him out of the fray."
