It would be fair to say that goalscoring has never been one of Richard Dunne’s fortes...until now.
He didn’t manage a single goal in 60 appearances for
Everton, and only found the net seven times in almost 300 games for
Manchester City.
But another change of club has brought a change of luck in front of goal for the Republic of Ireland international whose record for
Villa already stands at two in five. Not bad for a centre back.
Here,
Dunne continues his chat with Givemefootball’s Ian Clarkson...
Q: By previous standards, you are on a great goalscoring run at the moment?
A: It is nice to come in and score a couple of goals which helps me settle in, but it was a good all round show against Chelsea and the performance was brilliant.
We have got me, James (
Collins) and John (
Carew) who can head it and the delivery coming into the box is brilliant. I don't think I have ever scored two goals in a season before. I think I only got seven in nine years at City.
Q: Is it down to the service into the box?
A: The delivery is spot on and the ball is landing on the edge of the six yard box nearly every time. Thankfully the last couple of games we have been able to get our heads on them.
I probably should have scored again in the second half against
Chelsea, but it was nice for James to be able to get off the mark as well. It was brilliant to score and it meant a lot to me to score against City but this was a different situation. I was pleased to be able to celebrate this time.
Q: How have you settled in at Villa Park?
A: It has been really good and we are fighting at the right end of the table. At the moment it looks like we could have a good season. From day one the dressing room has been brilliant.
You speak to everyone every day and I am enjoying all the lads’ company and it makes everything easier and you are instantly making friends. You can see the team spirit when we go out and play games due to the amount of work we are putting in for each other.
Q: So no regrets about the move to Villa then?
A: I left Manchester City and that was it. I have come here and I want to try and blend in as quickly as I could and thankfully everyone has been really good. Everyone has accepted me and Stephen (
Warnock) and James (Collins). The biggest thing I can say is just look at the team's performances and the attitude and heart that is out on the pitch. It shows the dressing room is a happy place.
