Sam Hewson became the latest in a long list of young players released by Manchester United last month.Players such as Robbie Savage, David Platt and Ronnie Wallwork have found themselves in the same position during their fledgling careers before carving out good careers elsewhere. You have to have something about you if United spot your ability and it will not be long before the 21-year-old finds his second team.
Q: This is the first time you have been without a club over the summer. Has it been difficult for you?
A: Because it is new to me it has been a bit weird wondering what is going to happen. It can be a bit scary too because you are hoping someone will give you a chance to show what you can do. I am quite confident I will get something, I am just trying to keep myself fit and hopefully something will come off.
Q: What are you looking for in your next club?
A: I just want to be able to show them what I can do if they give me a chance to play my football. I am sure if I can get a couple of games they will see the true me and I can really help a team.
Q: What level would you like to play at?
A: I’m not really fussy. I know that, whatever level I am playing at, my ability will come through and people will see me. As long as I am playing and doing well I think I will move up the ladder anyway.
Q: Would you be willing to relocate if the right club came along?
A: To be honest I would be interested in any of that. I am not fussed about even going abroad or going down south. If a club shows interest then I don’t mind where it is.
Q: Have you had any interest yet?
A: We have had a few talks but there has been nothing really serious. I am just sitting and waiting and hoping something comes in the next week or so. I am just trying to keep myself fit.
Q: What would you say is your best attribute?
A: My passing is good, I like getting on the ball and creating things. When I am at my best and have a run of games I am also likely to score a few goals, I like timing my runs into the box. I am kind of an all-round midfielder really.
Q: You have played and trained alongside some great footballers whilst with Manchester United, who do you think you learned the most from?
A: I have played and trained with a lot of the first team and I think Paul Scholes has been the best. A lot of them are good to the young lads, they are always giving you advice, which has been really helpful.
Q: And do you think playing with players like that has aided your development?
A: Yeah, training with the first team is a big step up from reserve football. It is a lot faster and you can’t give it away as much. They demand more as well, which makes you do better so I have improved training with them.
