Phil Brown got his wish in the end – to avoid relegation and celebrate his 50th birthday as a Premier League manager.
It was nerve-racking stuff on the final day for
Hull who, as Brown put it, limped over the line. The Tigers live to fight another day however, and Brown can celebrate with his song, of sorts.
Q: Did you deserve to survive instead of Newcastle and Middlesbrough?
A: We absolutely deserved to stay up and have a second year in the Premier League. We got more points than the bottom three clubs - it is as simple as that.
Q: Where does this achievement rank on your CV?
A: It is the biggest thing I have ever done in my football career. Promotion to the Premier League last year was fantastic but this is absolutely brilliant.
Q: You must have gone through every emotion on the last day?
A: It was a strange afternoon. They scored a wonder goal from just outside the box. Once we went behind we always had a mountain to climb - especially against the quality of the
Manchester United team - no-one can question the quality of their line-up.
Q: We understand that Ian Ashbee and Jimmy Bullard were keeping you informed of developments?
A: They were both on telephones behind the dug-out. It was nerve-wracking towards the end but it was fully deserved. No-one can question the quality of the United team - it was there for all to see.
Q: How do you sum it all up?
A: It was a rollercoaster of emotions during the last 45 minutes because I asked for the scores at half time. We've survived - and I can say it's the greatest achievement of my career. One of my ambitions was to be a Premier League manager at 50, and it's come true.
