Tottenham striker Roman Pavlyuchenko reportedly rejected the chance to join Liverpool on deadline day.

It was alleged by talkSPORT that Roy Hodgson had made a last ditch attempt to sign the Russian international as his options ran out on Tuesday afternoon, and Metro now reports that the 28-year-old turned down the opportunity of moving to Anfield.

The former Spartak Moscow hotshot supposedly declined the transfer in order to play in the Champions League with Spurs rather than compete in the Europa League with Liverpool.

This reported snub capped off a frustrating deadline day for Hodgson who also made ultimately futile attempts to sign Fulham forward Bobby Zamora and Germany marksman Mario Gomez.

A bid for West Ham's Carlton Cole was also confirmed, but an agreement between the two clubs could not be reached.

Hodgson had been keen to add another frontman to his threadbare striking ranks in order to take the goalscoring burden away from Fernando Torres, but will now have to wait until January to bolster his squad.
