Real Madrid have beaten off strong competition from Manchester United and Inter Milan to land highly-rated French striker Karim Benzema.

The Lyon striker has been the subject of much speculation over the previous month, and although he originally stated his desire to stay at the Ligue 1 club, it appears a deal has been done.

A statement on the Lyon club website read: "Lyon announces the agreement with Real Madrid of the transfer of international attacker Karim Benzema."

The forward is currently negotiating personal terms, and the transfer is worth around £30 million. This could rise to as much as £35.2 million in a move that sees Benzema join Kaka and Cristiano Ronaldo at the Bernabeu.

The move is a hammer blow to Sir Alex Ferguson and Manchester United. The Red Devils have long been chasing the French international who has scored six goals in 24 appearances for his country.
