Wayne Rooney has no intention of following Cristiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid, despite his former teammate telling him recently ‘this is where the world greats play’.
The England striker would rather do a
Ryan than a Ronaldo, saying he would like to follow in the footsteps of
Manchester United legend Giggs.
“I have always said I would love to end my career at this club," Rooney told MUTV. "If I can get anywhere near what Ryan has done it would be an amazing achievement because I regard him as the perfect role model.
"You must have great respect for the way his life is and the way he handles himself. The things he has done throughout his career and the things he has won are unbelievable.
"Everyone looks up to him and if I even get close to the number of games he has played I would be delighted."
Rooney’s pledge of loyalty is bound to be well received by the United faithful as they will look to him to lead the club into a new era once the like of Giggs, Paul Scholes and Gary Neville call it a day.
Meanwhile, Sir Alex Ferguson has issued a vote of confidence in Ronaldo replacement Valencia, who took time settle following his move from Wigan.
“It is good to see him scoring," said Ferguson. "He did not show a scoring ability when he was at Wigan but when he came to us we talked about this and the fact if he is to progress his career, it was something he should work on."
The United boss added: “He is showing evidence of progress now. He has settled in and is emerging as a top performer. He has strength, good balance, speed and is a good crosser of the ball. But the main thing is that he is now playing with much more confidence.
"I am delighted with his steady improvement and hopefully he will prove to be another valuable source of goals as we move through the season."
