Blackburn are ready to reward central defender Ryan Nelsen for his astonishing impact in the Barclays Premiership by giving him a new contract in the summer - less than six months after he joined on a free transfer.

The 27-year-old New Zealand skipper has earned rave reviews as by helping Rovers to eight clean sheets in his 12 matches, even at such intimidating venues as Old Trafford and Anfield. Now Blackburn manager Mark Hughes is set to open talks with Nelsen about a new deal - one that is more lucrative and longer than his current contract which expires in the summer of 2006.

Blackburn chief executive John Williams said: "Ryan has done an excellent job for us and that is something we are keen on talking about at the end of this season."
