The world of football was rocked yesterday by the news that Chas and Dave have finally gone their separate ways.
The duo, whose classic hits included ‘Rabbit’, ‘Ain’t no pleasing you’ and ‘Snooker Loopy’ to name but a few, were synonymous with
Tottenham Hotspur’s four FA Cup final appearances between 1981 and 1991.
However, should Spurs reach an FA Cup final again then Dave’s decision to hang up his guitar means Harry Redknapp’s boys will have to find a new musical partner.
‘Ossie’s Dream’ was the 1981 classic that gave us the classic line of ‘to win the cup for Tottingham’ from Ossie Ardiles of Tottenham’s midfield.
Argentine compatriot Ricky Villa was obviously inspired as his wonder goal saw Spurs beat Manchester City and in 1982 the terrace chant ‘Tottenham, Tottenham no-one to stop them’, was heard around White Hart Lane after their success against QPR.
‘Hot Shot Tottenham’ saw them lose 3-2 against Coventry but ‘When the year ends in 1’ saw Spurs lift the trophy again back in 1991 against Nottingham Forest.
No other beat combo has had such an alliance with one club and bands such as Madness and Ian Dury and the Blockheads aren’t a million miles away from the style of Chas and Dave.
It got me thinking about what other clubs could benefit from a does of power pop were they to reach an FA Cup final.
With the Kaiser Chiefs named after Leeds United’s former centre half’s club in South Africa Lucas Radebe then there is ample opportunity for a killer track should Simon Grayson’s side reach the showpiece occasion once more.
Paul Heaton is a big Sheffield United fan so the former Housemartins and Beautiful South front man could well be drafted in for the Blades cup final song.
Oasis might well be tempted to reform for a rip snorter should Manchester City reach the final, which isn’t beyond the realms of possibility and if they meet Chelsea maybe Damon Albarn will record one final track with Blur to take us back to their rivalry of the nineties.
Mike Skinner of the Streets could belt out a turn should Birmingham reach the FA Cup final but he might have to do a duo with UB40.
Have Givemefootball readers got nothing better to do but think of any ideas for FA Cup final tunes? Who would be the ideal band to sing for your team should you reach the Wembley showcase occasion?
