Liverpool legend and former Newcastle manager Graeme Souness reckons Sir Alex Ferguson’s dramatic capture of Michael Owen is a stroke of genius.
There are some who believe that the
Manchester United boss is taking an almighty gamble on the England international whose career has stagnated in recent years.
But Souness believes there is still plenty more to come from
Owen, and reckons Old Trafford is the perfect stage for him to turn back the clock.
Former
Toon boss Souness, who bought Owen from Real Madrid, says: “I don't think Michael is shot. The move will excite him and give him a new lease of life.
"At United he will be surrounded by really good team-mates. It's also World Cup year, which will be a motivation for him."
He added: “He was Newcastle's top player at the time and all of that onus was on him. At United he will be just another player and surrounded by really good team-mates who can give him the service he needs.
"He will also be in the best environment in terms of treatment off the field and that is important to any player of his age."
Commenting on Ferguson's so-called gamble, he added: "I think this is a smart deal for him. It's a clever one especially when there are not too many available targets out there. In fact this could easily be the deal of the season if it works out for him."
