Andrew Driver was born in Oldham, but when his family re-located to Scotland due to his father’s work he began his career at Hutchinson Vale AFC before moving on to his current clubs Hearts.
The 21-year-old winger has been a star performer for the Scottish side over the last couple of years and his outstanding displays have not gone unnoticed south of the border, with Driver named in Stuart Pearce’s England Under 21 squad for this summer’s European Championships in Sweden.
Driver admitted he was shocked by the call-up after revealing his was all set for his summer break.
“It was unexpected. I was ready for my holiday in Barbados with my girlfriend and I’d booked Las Vegas too, so I lost a fortune,” he said.
“But I was delighted. I thought my chance had gone. I made the final 40 but then I picked up an injury and I thought that was it. But it was a chance to improve, play with quality players and put my name out in the open in a bigger tournament.”
Driver, who made his debut for Hearts in 2006 and has since played over 80 games for the Tynecastle outfit, added, “No disrespect to the Scottish league, which has been great for me, but probably a lot of people looked at the squad and didn’t know who I was.
“But the professionalism was brilliant and Stuart Pearce was brilliant. The players are all really sound, normal guys and everyone was really welcoming.”
