6. ROBIN VAN PERSIE - Signed for £2.75 million

If Robin van Persie can stay clear of injury, I still believe he can rival the likes of Fernando Torres, Wayne Rooney and Didier Drogba for the tag of the best striker in the Premier League.

Signed from Feyenoord for just £2.75 million where he was operating as a winger, the Dutchman has been successfully converted into a striker and I’m convinced there is more to come.

7. EMMANUEL ADEBAYOR - Signed for £5.5 million, sold for £25 million.

Wenger raided his old club Monaco to take a young, raw Togo striker called Emmanuel Adebayor to Arsenal for a fee of 5.5 million. Adebayor initially took a little bit of time to adjust to the rigours of the Premier League, but two years ago he scored 24 league goals to finish second in the Golden Boot behind Cristiano Ronaldo.

8. KOLO TOURE - Signed for £150,000, sold for £16 million

Few people had heard of Ivorian defender Kolo Toure when he was signed an unbelievably cheap fee in the region of £150,000 in 2003. Toure became one of the club’s most consistent performers during his six years in North London before a £16 million transfer to Manchester City last summer.

9. EMMANUEL PETIT - Signed for £2.5 million, sold for £7 million

Like Patrick Vieira, he was one of Wenger’s first signings and the pair went on to form an irresistible partnership in the centre of midfield.

Wenger turned the pony-tailed French international from a central defender into a holding midfield player and he won the Double in his first season at the club. Also a World Cup-winner with France in 1998, Petit left Arsenal to join Barcelona in 2000.

10. SOL CAMPBELL - Signed on a free transfer, left on a free transfer.

My final pick was a tough decision as I couldn’t decide between Sol Campbell, Freddie Ljungberg, Robert Pires and Andre Arshavin, but in the end I opted for the former England international.

Brought in to fill the void left by Tony Adams in 2001, Campbell won two Premier League titles and three FA Cups during his spell at Arsenal.
