Manchester United and Chelsea are set to battle for Italian defensive pair Andrea Ranocchia and Leonardo Bonucci.

The duo have been in impressive form for Bari this season, helping the Serie 'A' side build a solid foundation in the top division after promotion from Serie 'B' last season.

Andrea Ranocchia is regarded as the prime target, and the defender is on loan from Genoa with a host of clubs chasing his signature.

Arsenal is another Premier League club linked to the player, while Inter Milan and Juventus are also courting the youngster through the Italian press.

Genoa President Enrico Preziosi confirmed the interest for the Italian Under 21 international, and the club have placed a £13 million valuation on his head.

La Gazzetta dello Sport reports that Frank Arnesen is attempting to open discussions with regards to both players, but United are ready to up-the-anti for Ranocchia in particular. With Sir Alex Ferguson sweating over the long-term fitness of Rio Ferdinand, the Red Devils are expected to make serious moves in the defensive department. Either of these talented defenders, if not both, could be moving to the Premier League in January.
