Manchester United officials remain confident the club´s supporters will not be targeted by opposition fans following consecutive eruptions of unrest on their European away trips.

After being fined £6,300 by UEFA for the ´improper conduct´ of their supporters in the Champions League knockout win over Lille last month, United are likely to find themselves in the dock again after the violence which scarred Wednesday night´s quarter-final at the Stadio Olimpico.

A club source said: "We were fined after the Lille game because someone set a flare off inside the visiting section. It was a relatively minor incident but a fine is mandatory in situations like that. That is the way of the world but we are not concerned about a long-term problem involving our fans."
