Manchester United are leading the race for young Belgian star Geoffrey Hairemans.

The Red Devils have already given the 18-year-old midfielder a trial at their Carrington training ground, and the United cause is aided by current reserve coach Warren Joyce working with the player at his previous club.

That club is Royal Antwerp, a feeder team for Manchester United and a base for youngsters from Old Trafford to gain valuable first team experience.

This makes United firm favourites, and comes as bad news to Everton, who have also been monitoring the player. Toffees scouts have been to watch Hairemans, but the United experience may prove a hammer blow to the interests of the Goodison Park club.

"I was shocked when I learnt that an Everton scout was watching me. I have never expected anything like this," said Hairemans after his week trial with United.

"The intensity was very high and the training those guys do was quite hard.

"I also trained with the first-team boys, with Paul Scholes and Michael Owen, but I dared not speak with them."
