Manchester United are set to make a shock move to sign Sol Campbell, according to The Sun.

United are desperate to sign another centre back to solve their current defensive crisis that has Rio Ferdinand, Wes Brown, Gary Neville, Jonny Evans and John O'Shea all injured.

In last night’s Champions League game with Wolfsburg, Ferguson was forced to play midfielders Michael Carrick and Darren Fletcher in defence such is the shortage of numbers at the back.

Since walking out at Notts County in September, Campbell is now finally allowed to play again after the club released the former Arsenal and Spurs star’s registration after reaching an agreement.

United are now eyeing Campbell as a possible short term solution for the rest of the season.

It is reported that if United were to sign the 35-year then he will be available to play at the start of the New Year.
