Manchester United are tracking young German goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.
The 23-year-old Schalke stopper is seen as one of the major assets at a Bundesliga side in financial trouble, and despite the club receiving a recent financial boost, they could be forced to sell if an offer came in that was too good to refuse.
United have been linked with a string of goalkeepers, including highly-rated CSKA Moscow keeper Igor Akinfeev, but Neuer now appears to be one of the main targets after his agent confirmed that Manchester United were watching the player.
Sir Alex Ferguson is keen to add to his side in the goalkeeping department, with the Red Devils waiting on a decision from Edwin Van der Sar over a possible retirement. Ben Foster and Tomasz Kuszczak are both ready to fight for the No.1 jersey, but they might have another competitor if wide-spread reports are to be believed.
"I have heard of interest from Manchester United, we know about that," Thomas Kroth told Sport Bild.
"Manuel would also like to play with a team that has a better international level."Bayern Munich are also interested in Neuer, and a bid close to the £12 million mark is expected to be enough to take the keeper away from his boyhood club.
