Manchester United are still keen to sign Standard Liege midfielder Steven Defour but will have to wait until January, according to Talksport.
The Red Devils have been admirers of the Belgian for years, Sir Alex Ferguson even sent him a letter wishing him a speedy recovery from a foot injury he suffered last season.
Their interest had gone quiet until late in the transfer window, with the fitness of Owen Hargreaves being questioned, when the link re-surfaced.
However, Hargreaves has been included in United’s 25-man squad, which lasts until January, because they could not get a deal sorted in time before transfer deadline day finished.
It has now emerged that Defour would not have move to Manchester in the summer anyway, and that United will try to snap him up in January.
A source close to the player told Talksport: “United were interested in Defour but there was no official bid.
“He wouldn't have moved this summer any way. Beyond that, we will look in January and assess it then. United remain keen on him, for sure.”
If Hargreaves cannot get himself fit enough to play many games in the first half of the season then another holding midfielder will be a necessity in the next window.
