England’s finest player of a generation is apparently in line for a frosty reception on his return to the MLS.
However,
David Beckham once faced the wrath of a flying boot from Sir Alex Ferguson and has had the world’s media following his every move for the best part of two decades, so he is unlikely to be fazed by the prospect of jeers from LA Galaxy supporters.
Beckham was heralded as the man to take American soccer to the next level when he arrived two seasons ago, but a loan spell at AC Milan followed by a public declaration of his desire to remain in Europe hasn’t made him flavour of the month in Los Angeles.
The midfield maestro is set to return for an MLS clash against New York Red Bulls on July 16 but, according to Landon Donovan, he will have to work hard to convince his team mates that he wants to remain at the fulcrum of the side.
Donovan is as big a name in American soccer as Beckham is in England, and he has made public his views in ‘The Beckham Experiment’ - a book by Grant Wahl. “My sense is David's clearly frustrated, that he's unhappy and, honestly, that he thinks it's a joke,” said Donovan.
“I also feel he has taken the team for granted. I don't see dedication or commitment to this team - and that's troubling.
"All that we care about at a minimum is that he committed himself to us. As time has gone on, that has not proven to be the case in many ways - on the field, off the field.
"Maybe he's not a leader, maybe he's not a captain. Fair enough. But at a minimum you should bust your ass every day. I don't think that's too much for us to expect. But that hasn't happened."
