Aston Villa manager Alex McLeish says on a huge for for captain Stiliyan Petrov would force the club to part with the Bulgarian.

Reports last week suggested Petrov was wishing to draw an end to his five-year career at Villa Park.

In an interview last week he was quoted as saying he dreamt of playing for Liverpool, despite wanting stay committed to the midlands club.

“I’ve never said to Stan, 'We’ll try and get you out in January," McLeish said.

“Sometimes you have to make a sacrifice, but we have no intentions of letting Stan go in January unless someone comes in with a bid we can’t refuse.”

With Liverpool's potential interest in Petrov unknown, the midfielder looks set to stay at Villa.

Furthermore, given the club's recent recruitment of Charlie Adam and Jordan Henderson, the Anfield club are unlikely to invest in another central midfielder.
