Arsene Wenger praised the character of his Arsenal side after they battled back from 2-0 down to win a "classic" FA Cup tie against Aston Villa at the Emirates Stadium.

Richard Dunne and Darren Bent had put the visitors in command at the break, before Dunne upended Aaron Ramsey for Robin Van Persie to dispatch the resulting spot-kick. Theo Walcott levelled via a ricochet before another penalty from Van Persie saw Wenger's men through to a last-16 tie with Sunderland or Middlesbrough.

Wenger said: "I was very impressed because I felt that when you come out of a bad period like we are, and you are 2-0 down, you can feel sorry for yourself or you can show you have the mental qualities to play for this club."
