Wigan boss Roberto Martinez insists he’s looking to strengthen his squad in the January transfer window – not sell his best players to the detriment of the group.
Maynor Figueroa, scorer of a Beckhamesque wonder goal at the weekend, and fans’ favourite Paul Scharner are being linked with moves away from the DW Stadium.
But Martinez insists: “We are not in a position where we have to sell. I am looking to bring players in during January and I am sure we will do that but the focus just now is getting the best from players we already have.
"You won't hear me rejecting speculation about anyone coming to Wigan because we are having to look in a lot of leagues to find the right characters.
"For us, it is not just about signing good players, it is about making sure the personalities are perfect too. But I am certainly not looking to lose any players in January,” added Martinez, who remained coy when asked about the prospect of Sol Campbell joining the club.
Campbell is free to find himself a new club when the transfer window re-opens next month after finally securing his release from Notts County earlier in December.
Martinez said: “Well I am sure you cannot buy the sort of experience you can get through playing many years in the Premiership so that is going to be a big asset for any football club.
"From our point of view I will always talk about the players we have got in the squad and I am not going to hide from the situation that we want to improve our football club, improve our playing staff and you can only do that in the [transfer] windows.”
